The Invasion of Fire Island Pines

July 4th

Invasion of the pines

Every Fourth of July, Fire Island Pines hosts one of the most iconic and meaningful traditions on Fire Island. Known as The Invasion, this annual event brings the drag community of Cherry Grove across the bay for a day defined by celebration, visibility, and pride.

What began in 1976 as a protest against discrimination has evolved into a powerful celebration of queer history and self expression. Each year, hundreds of queens and supporters arrive by ferry in full glam, welcomed by cheering crowds along the Pines harbor. The waterfront comes alive with color, confidence, and a sense of joy that is unmistakably Fire Island Pines.

For more than 28 years, D. Katen Fire Island Properties has proudly supported the Fire Island community, contributing to local organizations, cultural events, and the Invasion itself. This long standing commitment reflects a deep belief in preserving the history, spirit, and inclusivity that make Fire Island Pines such a special place to live and gather.

Beyond the spectacle, The Invasion represents the heart of Fire Island. It is about community, resilience, and the freedom to be unapologetically yourself. For residents, homeowners, and visitors alike, it is a reminder of why Fire Island Pines remains one of the most vibrant and culturally significant summer destinations in the country.

Whether you are watching from the harbor, hosting friends at home, or experiencing it for the first time, the Invasion of Fire Island Pines captures the bold, welcoming energy that defines this community year after year.
